A belated congratulations are in order to Indra Nooyi, who has been appointed the Chief Executive Officer of PepsiCo., effective October 1, 2006. (The announcement was made August 14, 2006).
This is really big news.
Ms. Nooyi is only the second woman of color to be named CEO of a Fortune 500 company (Pepsi’s 2006 Rank: 61). Since May 2001, she served as PepsiCo.’s President and Chief Financial Officer, at which time she was also named to the company’s Board of Directors. So she has been in the C-suite (or the woc-suite) for some time now.
She is also the first woman of color to be named CEO of a Fortune 100 company. Avon, of which Ms. Andrea Jung is CEO is ranked 281 in the 2006 F500).
She holds the second-highest rank among women in the Fortune 500 (Patricia Woertz, CEO of Archers Daniel Midland is first at #56).
